Infrastructure Management Transformation

Infrastructure Management Transformation

Over the years, a leading fast-food chain has experienced exponential growth within its technology organization. To maintain consistency and quality, they engaged Artisan Studios to conduct a risk assessment, develop a strategy for growth, and serve as their primary infrastructure as a service provider to ensure all 42+ Kubernetes clusters are always up-to-date, unified, and codified.

The Challenge

The rapid growth in development teams revealed weaknesses in their infrastructure management practices. Because each team had the liberty to choose how they set up their cloud environment, inconsistencies quickly multiplied. The lack of uniformity made quality assurance difficult and left the entire organization at risk of potential security loopholes and lengthy downtimes.

The Strategy

The client recognized they needed help maintaining the consistency and quality of their infrastructure and cloud environments. A team of site reliability engineers was brought in to take the burden of infrastructure management off of the client’s development teams, allowing them to focus on innovation and creating value-add code.

Phase One: Exploration

Artisan interfaced with client leaders and technology teams to understand their key objectives and pain points. The team also evaluated the existing architecture and ensured they understood the organization’s future growth plans.

Phase Two: Strategic Infrastructure Advisory

The client received a thorough risk assessment, a strategic plan for incorporating infrastructure best practices at scale, and a detailed tactical roadmap for execution.

Phase Three: DevOps & Site Reliability Engineering

Next, the Artisan team was invited to roll up their sleeves and implement the recommended changes to the client’s cloud infrastructure. All infrastructure was codified, all environments were updated to ensure security, and all 42+ clusters were reorganized for consistency without creating down-time for the development teams that rely on them.

Phase Four: Ongoing Infrastructure Management

The client deployed Artisan to manage their infrastructure on an ongoing basis. This team ensures all infrastructure stays current, codified, and organized. They work closely with each development team to execute and communicate any changes in infrastructure and jump in to help when any issues arise.
